Most of the time there is nothing you can do to avoid being laid off. However there are occasions when companies are looking to trim only the fat which could be employees in redundant positions, those with elevated salaries compared to the current market rate and those who are poor or mediocre performers. In these cases there is a chance that you can avoid being laid off. Consider the case of a small corporate office with less than forty employees. Let’s say that four of these employees worked in the same or a similar function. Organizational leaders may chose to eliminate at least one of the four positions and divide the duties amongst the remaining positions.
In order to minimize the perception that you are redundant you should find ways to differentiate your work and skills. Let’s face it, managers are always looking for ways to get rid of poor performers. Due to strict labor laws in some states many employers are very cautious about terminating, even if it is warranted. When asked to reduce headcount in a department the manager gladly offers up the poorest performers or the trouble-makers. In order to avoid being placed in this bucket you should work hard to master your job. Also find ways to show your manager that you are dependable. You can prove that you are a valuable asset to the company by providing support and leadership in your role inside your department and to those outside your department.
