Are You Being Laid Off?

31 Jul

In today’s economy companies are struggling even more to find ways to cut costs.  The truth is that labor cost is usually one of the company’s highest costs.  Keep in mind that you are more expensive than just your salary.  There are other costs involved in employing each individual, such as benefits, insurances, taxes and more.  This is why laying off is usually one of the first actions organizations take to save money.

For people who have been employed at the same company for several years the threat of being laid off can be scarier than for those who were recently hired.  This is usually because long term employees are out of practice in job searching for a new job.  Don’t misunderstand my point; I am not saying that the potential of being laid off isn’t scary for everyone.

Downsizing takes a toll on even those who are able to keep their job because they often have to say goodbye to cherished coworkers who have become friends.  Employees who remain with the company usually take on the workload of employees who were laid off.  Yes, layoffs can be an emotional ride but there are things you can do to prepare for it.
